The beautiful game - powerchair football
Following the Olympic and Paralympics Games in 2012 many more disabled people have been motivated to become involved in sport and fitness.

Powerchair football in particular is becoming increasingly popular among young people, with nearly one third of all disabled people engaged in sport choosing to play the game. Furthermore, over half of people currently playing powerchair football are affected by muscular dystrophy or a related neuromuscular condition.

Many powerchair users find that wheelchair football allows them to engage in a team sport without requiring a huge amount of physical exertion compared to other team sports. The match time is shorter than an ordinary match, and players can take breaks when required.

    What is powerchair football?
Powerchair football, also known as power soccer is a mixed-gender competitive team sport for people with disabilities who use power wheelchairs. The game is played indoors on a regulation basketball court.  Two teams of four players use powerchairs equipped with footguards to attack, defend and spin-kick a 13-inch (330 mm) football in an attempt to score goals.

The game is played in two 20-minute periods. Each team can have four players on the court at a time, including the goalkeeper. Only a player and an opponent are allowed within three metres of the ball when it is in play, and the defending team is only allowed two players in their own goal area. Intentionally striking or ramming another player may result in a penalty.

    How can I get involved?
Powerchair football in the UK is governed by the Wheelchair Football Association (WFA). The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the exclusive charity partner to the WFA and will soon be undertaking a range of activities to raise awareness of the opportunity to participate.

Visit the Wheelchair Football Association's website to find a club near you and for more information about joining a team or starting your own team, what equipment you'll need, and upcoming competitions.
